#JustEngaged! Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing Wedding Glossaries to assist you in the initial planning stage! Today, we begin with a “Wedding Party Glossary”.
Bridesmaids
A group of people, usually girls but no always, chosen by the bride to stand with her on her very special day. She normally chooses them from her siblings, closest relatives or friends. The bride will sometimes delegate some small tasks to each to help her in the planning in both the lead-up and on the day!
Best Man
The role given to the closest person in the groom’s life. It can be a relative or a friend. Although it is usually a man, the groom can choose a woman. She is called Best Woman or Best Person. The Best Person usually organizes the Stag Party. The Best Man usually takes charge of bringing the rings to the ceremony and getting the groom there on time!
Fiance(e)
The title of the future wife and husband during the period between the engagement and the wedding.
Flower Girl
The Flower Girl is a young girl who walks down the aisle with the bridal party and, pending venue, may even be able to scatter flower petals down the aisle during the bridal procession.
Groomsmen
A group of people, usually men but not always, chosen by the groom to stand with him on his very special day. He normally chooses them from his siblings, closest relatives or friends. The groom will sometimes delegate some small tasks to each to help him in the planning in both the lead-up and on the day!
Maid of Honor / Chief Bridesmaid
The role usually given to a person very close to the brie with a very special place in her life. It will normally be a sibling/relative or a friend. Although it is usually a woman, the bride can choose a man and he is called Man of Honor. The Maid of Honor’s many jobs include organizing the Hen Party, holding the bride’s bouquet during the ceremony and keeping the bride stress free.
Matron of Honor
The title given to the Maid of Honor when she is married.
Page Boy
The title given to a small boy carrying the train of the bride down the aisle during the bridal procession. Or if there are a couple of them on may carry a fun sign!
Plus One
A Plus One is an option for a guest to invite a date if your numbers permit. It is a nice idea to give a plus one to guests who may not know a lot of people at the wedding so that they are not alone.
Ring Bearer
The title given to the small boy who carries the rings down the aisle during the brides processional. Some times, the rings carried by the Ring Bearer are false and the real rings are in safety with the Best Man.
Usher
Two guests who guide the other guests to their seat before the ceremony. Their role is particularly important if there are set sides for the bride and groom. They will also hand out the ceremony programs and can walk Mum’s / grandmothers to their seats as part of the processional.
